The student and junior health and care professionals programme
The International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare is proud to offer a recommended programme stream for emerging quality and safety leaders.
Addressing the needs of healthcare students to junior clinicians (up to postgraduate year 2, or prior to commencing specialty training), the programme will build a community around the next generation of health and care professionals dedicated to patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
The programme includes:

Develop your skills and meet with other improvers from around the world at this interactive workshop.
M5: Saving the planet – reducing healthcare waste to improve environmental impact
This workshop will explore the hard facts on waste in healthcare and it will offer practical tools and solutions for addressing waste and environmental harm in health and care settings.

K1: Opening keynote: Kedar Mate
Our opening keynote from the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
Join Göran Henriks and Helen Bevan for this provocative session on navigating complex situations and some of the big dilemmas in creating tomorrow today.
A6: How to make data count when it comes to engaging people (workshop)
Take part in this workshop with John Boulton and Doris Behrens and gain an insight into the core principles of data representation in the context of different stakeholders and ‘people styles at work’.
Join the IHI Open School for an opportunity to meet with colleagues and new connections from across the global Quality Improvement community.
B4: The future is digital? Three perspectives from Sweden
Hear about the experiences of three organisations in Sweden. They are facing challenges such as organisation-wide digital transformation and adoption, access to knowledge and learning, and transition to remote person-centred care (eHealth).
C2: Communicating for Behavior Change – How can we help people do things differently?
Join this session with Selina Stephen to understand the main learning points from Scotland’s pandemic communications. You will be able to translate this learning into practical use for your own improvement work.
K2: Keynote: Improving physical and mental wellbeing in young people
Hear from Klas Bergling and Carolina Klüft about their experiences and work to improve physical and mental wellbeing in young people.

Nadia Nadim, a former Afghan refugee representing the Denmark football team at an international level, will be sharing her experience of overcoming adversity.
D6: Making “learning” part of routine “doing” in health care
In this interactive workshop, we will offer a framework for learning and, drawing on examples from the NHS’s pandemic response and playing forward into resetting and rebuilding care post-acute covid, we will explore what it takes to design-in learning both locally and at scale for patient, staff and taxpayer (ie, funder) benefit.
F5: Improving equity in local communities: learning and approaches from anchor institutions
Join this session to gain an understanding of how healthcare organisations acting as anchor institutions can impact population health and improve equity.
K4: Closing Keynote: Maureen Bisognano and Pedro Delgado
Hear from Maureen Bisognano – President Emerita and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and Pedro Delgado who oversees IHI’s portfolio of work in Latin America, Europe, and Australasia, plus the IHI Open School.
Student Scholarships
We are offering a limited number of scholarships and special discounts for students in full-time education and teachers to attend the International Forum. These will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
These discounts are applicable to our three main conference days registration fees only and are not applicable for travel, accommodation or other costs associated with attending the conference.
Early Bird rates are not available for our special discount packages.
To apply for the discounted student places, please send one of the following to Rachel Vangucci at rvangucci@bmj.com:
- A copy of your student card which clearly displays the date of validity in numerical form
- An official letter issued by the Dean of your university confirming you will be in full-time education at the time of the conference you are booking (20-22 June 2022)
If your application is successful, you will be provided with further instructions on how to register with our student rates.
